I just found out today that one of my photographs was selected for Vermont PhotoPlace Gallery’s Abstractions in Photography Show. The image, shown below, will be in the on-line portion of the show and also in the Blurb-published exhibition catalog. I’m particularly excited about this acceptance since this is one of my first forays into black & white photography in many years. You can see everything selected for the show (75 photos out of the over 1300 entered) here.

Night Photography – a beginning
Aug 23rd, 2010 by admin
I’ve been pretty lax on updating this blog of late – one reason is because I had an excellent workshop with Todd Hido on night photography that was pretty draining. It was my first workshop experience and was definitely worthwhile for me. I’ll be showing some of my work from the workshop over the next few weeks in this space. I’m pretty excited about night photography as I believe it will really open up new avenues for my photography – I tried many types of work during the week-long workshop and I’m not sure which of these types of work I’ll end up pursuing ultimately, but I’m sure night photography will become an essential part of what I photograph.
Here’s one image from my workshop from one of my favorite haunts, Barrett’s Cove, just down the street from my house. This is about a 12 minute exposure – that is where the star trails come from (resulting from the rotation of the earth that is visible because of the longer exposure) for those of you who aren’t familiar with this sort of photography…
The actual experience of taking this photograph is something I’ll always remember – about 1 am, the calls of the loons all around me (and not much else), and the peak of the Perseid meteor shower happening right above me. With a 12 minute exposure, of course, there is lots of time to listen to the loons and watch the meteors. Because of the long exposure, the meteor shower isn’t visible as the meteors moved too quickly to show up on the photograph.
Let me know what you think!

Reception This Thursday…
Aug 23rd, 2010 by admin
Just as a reminder, the closing reception for my show with Stacey Cramp at VoxPhotographs is this Thursday from 6-8 pm at the Danforth Inn in Portland, Maine, from 6-8 pm. After that day, the show will be up for a month or so at the Danforth Inn. Hope to see everyone there!
The Dark Night
Aug 7th, 2010 by admin
That is the name of the week-long workshop at Maine Media Workshops that I’m starting tomorrow. I’m a sucker for a good name – I even took a constitutional law course in law school entitled “Love and Death” in an homage to the Woody Allen movie. (The subject, incidentally, was gay marriage, right to die, and abortion. )
I’m incredibly excited about the opportunity to take this course and in particular taking it with Todd Hido, a photographer whose work I greatly respect. As you may have guessed, it is about night photography – a genre I’ve been itching to start trying. I’ll tell everyone all about it in a little over a week!
And, finally, a new image of mine that was taken in broad daylight but reminds me a bit of the dark night (a bit like Caponigro’s universe apple if you’ve seen that). Bonus points to anyone who knows where this is…
Two Squared Show goes on the road…
Aug 7th, 2010 by admin
The show I’m in with Stacey Cramp at VoxPhotographs is now going on the road. The show will be moving to the lovely Danforth Inn in Portland, Maine on August 26th, where it will remain through September. There will be an opening (technically a closing reception) on August 26th at the Danforth Inn from 6-8 with tasty food, live music, and more. And, until then, you can still see the show at VoxPhotographs by contacting Heather Frederick…
CMCA show – Photographing Maine: Ten Years Later
Aug 6th, 2010 by admin
I’m very excited to announce that I’ll be in an upcoming show at the Center for Maine Contemporary Art (CMCA) in Rockport, Maine this fall. The show is entitled Photographing Maine: Ten Years Later and is a broad survey of fine art photography in Maine over the last 10 years. The show runs from October 2 – December 5, 2010 with an opening reception on Saturday, Oct. 2, from 2-5 pm. Each photographer is limited to one image in the show and the photograph of mine that was selected is The Tarn (below). I can’t wait to see the show and to see who else is in this!
Summer in Maine
Aug 1st, 2010 by admin
There is an interesting looking show coming up at Carver Hill opening this Friday. The show is entitled Equilibrium: Finding the Balance by Jon Kolkin – it looks well worthwhile and I look forward to seeing the prints in person. You can find out more here in the press release as well.
Here is another of my favorite images from this summer – this one is from nearby Megunticook Lake right around sunset. It is a little depressing that it is already August and that means that the Maine summer is already in the home stretch…but luckily I love fall up here even more than summer.

The Show Aftermath (as well as a new workshop here in Maine)
Jul 19th, 2010 by admin
Thanks to everyone who turned out for my show with Stacey Cramp last Thursday – I really enjoyed meeting everyone and having an opportunity to talk about my work. Thanks also to all of those who couldn’t make it but who sent their best wishes and support – it is definitely appreciated. The show will remain up at VoxPhotographs until August 28th so there is still time to see it – please contact Heather Frederick or myself if you wish to do so.
There is a new workshop organization based in Portland, Maine just starting up that I wanted to mention as well – Clay Atkinson (co-owner of the wonderful but now defunct Domaine Gallery) and Susan Porter (currently of the Addison Woolley Gallery) have started the Atkinson-Porter Photography Workshops, a promising addition to the Maine photography scene. The first workshop will be entitled The Emotional Landscape and runs from August 27-29 – it looks phenomenal and I wish I wasn’t otherwise committed that weekend. You can find out more detail on the workshop here. I definitely look forward to seeing what they have in store next.
And, finally, here is one new image from this summer from Acadia National Park…
New work from Acadia (Cadillac Mountain)
Jul 11th, 2010 by admin
I’ve been a bit remiss on posting new work the last few weeks, so I’d like to post a group from a sunrise shoot from Cadillac Mountain from a little less than two months ago (which, given the sunrise times that time of year, means that these are from pre-sunrise times of around 3:30 am. The light created a very surreal look on the ocean surface from the higher perspective and I quite like how these turned out. As always, please let me know what you think or if you have any favorites!
The first image is looking northward before sunrise where two separate lighthouses can be seen:
The next image is looking roughly east from the same timeframe that has some of the surreal color on the water:
And one last one that I love for both the graphic simplicity as well as the two lobster boats that can be barely seen going out to sea:
The boats are admittedly hard to see in the web image – below is a crop of the boat that is near the left edge about a third of the way up from the bottom:
